This guide will take you through the process of setting up your MNTD. Fi Pro Outdoor Hotspot. Please follow the setup steps carefully and reach out to our knowledgeable support team for assistance here if needed.
Guide Usage
It is highly recommended that you open this guide on a computer or tablet or print it out instead of following it on the smartphone that will be used to run the app and register the Helium Mobile Hotspot.
You can view this page from a second device by following this link or visiting the MNTD. Help Center and searching for MNTD. Fi Pro.
What’s in the Box?
- MNTD. Fi Pro Outdoor Hotspot
- IEEE 802.3at PoE Injector
- Mounting brackets and screws
Setup Requirements
- Mobile device: iPhone with iOS 14.0 or higher or Android with Android 11 or higher
- Wired network connection supporting over 100Mbps for maximum rewards eligibility
- Gigabit-capable Power Over Ethernet (PoE) injector for maximum rewards eligibility
- Cat5e (or higher) rated Ethernet cable to connect the PoE injector to your router
- Cat5e (or higher) outdoor rated Ethernet cable to connect the PoE injector to the MNTD. Fi Pro Outdoor Hotspot, up to a maximum length of 300ft
- Mounting pole, depending on the installation location
⚠️ NOTE - In order for the Hotspot to be eligible for maximum rewards, it must pass backhaul speed tests and measure at least 100Mbps. |
Due to the physical limitations of 100Mbps network interfaces, if the link between the router and Hotspot is 100Mbps-rated, speed tests will fall slightly below the mark (high 90's) and qualify for reduced rewards. It is recommended that the link between the router and Hotspot be Gigabit-rated to ensure speed tests are able to meet or exceed 100Mbps.
Your internet connection only needs to be above 100Mbps to qualify for maximum rewards. It is not required to have a Gigabit internet connection to qualify for maximum rewards.
Step 1: Unbox the MNTD. Fi Pro
⚠️ NOTE - The Hotspot’s box has a QR code containing the network credentials necessary to connect to the Hotspot during later setup steps. Please keep the box at hand for setup. |
We recommend that you save the box or take a picture of the QR code. The QR code is also available on the back of the Hotspot, however, it might be hard to access after the Hotspot is installed and mounted at its final location.
Step 2: Connect Your Hotspot
- Connect one end of the outdoor Cat6 Ethernet cable to the Hotspot and another end to the PoE port of the Power Over Ethernet (PoE) injector.
- Connect one end of the normal Ethernet cable to an available LAN port on your router, and the other end to the LAN port of the PoE injector.
- Connect one end of the power adapter to the PoE injector, and the other end to an available wall outlet. The Hotspot will be supplied power through the Ethernet cable via the PoE injector's power adapter.
⚠️ NOTE - If everything is connected properly, the light indicator on the Hotspot will turn solid blue. |
Step 3: Update the Hotspot Firmware
The MNTD. Fi Pro Outdoor Hotspot may need to be updated to the latest firmware. This process is automatic and will take a few minutes. During the upgrade, the LED light will turn from solid blue to blinking blue.
After the update is complete, the LED light will turn off, indicating an automatic reboot of the Hotspot. Once the reboot is complete, the LED light will turn blinking blue followed by a solid blue which indicates that the Hotspot is ready to operate.
⚠️ NOTE - Please ensure that the LED light is solid blue before moving to the next step. |
Step 4: Mount the Hotspot
Follow the mounting tips to install your Hotspot.
Face Your Users
Hotspots create coverage from their front face. Signals can pass through glass, but trees, buildings, and other objects may block or reflect them causing reduced coverage.
Place It High
Mount your Hotspot higher to avoid signal loss from structures like trees or buildings. Remember to tilt down the higher you place it.
Use the Mount
Mount your Hotspot on a pole. Use the included mount to direct your signal towards its users.
Step 5: Download and Install the Helium Mobile Builder App
- Helium Mobile Builder App: This is the recommended and easiest option for new builders. Everything required is included in this app.
- Helium Wallet: This is an advanced option for builders with self-custodied Helium Wallets. If you are unsure what this is, please choose the “Helium Mobile Builder App” option.
Download Helium Mobile Builder App
- Android: Download Helium Mobile Builder
- iOS: Download Helium Mobile Builder
Step 6: Sign in to the Helium Mobile Builder App
Create an Account or Log In to Helium Mobile
You can use the same login you use for cellular service if you are a Helium Mobile subscriber. This is the recommended and easiest option for new builders.
You can also login with a Helium Wallet. This is an advanced option for builders with self-custodied Helium Black Wallets. If you are unsure what this is, please create an account or log into an existing Helium Mobile account.
Step 7: Connect to the Hotspot
⚠️ NOTE - Please ensure you have Wi-Fi enabled on your phone before proceeding with this step. |
When prompted, allow the Helium Mobile Builder App permissions to use the camera, then scan the QR code on the box or back of the Hotspot.
Alternatively, you can enter the Hotspot’s network credential manually, located on the QR code sticker. If you are unable to connect to the Hotspot’s network, please make sure your phone is in the direct line of sight of the Hotspot.
Step 8: Establish a GPS Lock
Once you’ve connected to the Hotspot’s network, the app will show the “Acquiring GPS” screen. This step may take up to 20 minutes. If after 20 minutes the screen has not advanced, please make sure the Hotspot is installed in a location where it has an unobstructed view of the sky in order to allow for lock-on to GPS satellites.
Step 9: Confirm the Installation Location
Once the GPS lock is acquired successfully, you will be able to see the location of your Hotspot on the next screen. Verify the location data is accurate and retry if needed.
⚠️ WARNING - Be sure the location information is correct - an incorrect location could lead to your Hotspot being added to the denylist and having rewards suspended! |
Step 10: Confirm the Installation Height
Measure the height of your Hotspot installation in feet and enter the information when prompted. Measure the height the Hotspot is located above the surrounding terrain, not above sea level.
Step 11: Confirm the Hotspot Directionality
Hotspots provide coverage radiating outwards from their front face. When measuring directionality, aim the top edge of your phone in the same direction the front of your Hotspot is pointing.
Step 12: Register Your Hotspot
Verify the information about your Hotspot is correct before proceeding to the final registration step. The registration process typically takes just a few moments, but can take up to 10 minutes depending on network conditions.
Step 13: View Your New MNTD. Fi Pro Outdoor Hotspot
The 'Fleet' Tab displays your Hotspots. Your newly deployed Hotspot should be indicated with a blue dot.
⚠️ NOTE - It may take up to 10 minutes for the Hotspot to appear in the list. |
Step 14: Test Connectivity
Helium Mobile users with Dynamic Coverage Enhanced activated on their devices can connect to the MNTD. Fi Pro Outdoor Hotspot when in range.
⚠️ NOTE - Please allow three to ten minutes after successful Hotspot registration for the device to be ready to start broadcasting the “Helium Mobile” Wi-Fi network and providing coverage for subscribers. |
If you have a Helium Mobile SIM equipped cellular device, you can test the coverage yourself.
- Disconnect and disable auto join to any Wi-Fi network in the same area.
- Your phone should automatically join the Helium Mobile network being broadcast by your MNTD. Fi Pro Outdoor Hotspot.
